Those that
have visited the website since its launch will notice that I
normally have several projects going at once and that I read
several books at the same time. Why do I do this?
First
off, I will admit to having organizational skills that are great
at times and deplorable at others. I will, through sheer
discipline and over the next four months, read all of the books
in my current
reading section:
While this may seem like a long period to read eight or so books
I would simply point to the length of each book.
At
this time I have approximately eight books with over 3,550 pages
to read. Reading at a rate of 50 pages per day it will
take me 71 days. Assuming a five day reading week (I can't
read everyday) it will take 14.2 weeks or approximately three
months to read the entire list, as it stands now. I must
note that I intend on buying and reading Peter Drucker's new
book in July, as soon as it comes out. This will add some
additional number of pages (200-300) to the total but I love a
good Drucker book.
So
why do I do this to myself?
- Lots
of Interests: My
interests vary widely but, as you might be able to tell, my
reading is primarily contained to business, economics and
history. I am a
big believer that history repeats itself and that much of
what has been learned in the past has come through
observance of society. As
a result, I am seeking to better understand the times and
lives in which some of the greatest economic thinkers and
writers lived.
- Non-Fiction:
“Life is here and now so deal with it.”
That is my motto.
In my opinion science fiction books are mostly a form
of escapism so I am not interested in them.
What does interest me substantially, however, is the
world in which some fictional writers lived in.
As a result, their lives and times tend to be
reflected in their works through social observation. I
believe that I need to have a better understanding of the
past to appreciate works by Charles Dickens, Hemingway, Mark
Twain and F. Scott Fitzgerald. For the record, my writing
style is highly passive and I don’t intend on being a
writer as a profession but I am very interested in economic
history and hope to add some insights for people visiting
the website.
- ADD?:
I don’t know if I suffer from ADD (attention deficit
disorder) but I find myself bored easily.
I believe it is why I turned to magazines in my early
college years as the short articles perfectly matched my
attention span. Don’t
get me wrong. Many
people with ADD don’t read books of substantial length but
I believe my intense interest in the subject matter I read
and desire to learn more keeps me going.
In general my reading pace is HORRIBLY SLOW.
That is the short version folks.
The short, short version is that multiple books = more
entertaining for me vs. one subject matter because it keeps me
interested in how many topics are highly interrelated.
