Hey there everyone! I hope things are going well and that each and every person is having a good summer season. The July 2002 newsletter points to lots of new information / changes on the website.  As always, I appreciate all feedback and comments.  If anyone wants to send some feedback just shoot an e-mail to dan@betterbizbooks.com.

So, without further waiting, here is new information on the website that is FREE to readers such as yourself.

I have added a new quote section entitled “Work/Success Quotes  For those interested there are over 40 in the list and they are quoted from famous intellectuals, world leaders and historical figures.

New Website Section
**************************************************************************************

Currently Reading Section - Someone recently asked me what books I am reading and why I am reading them.  I decided to post it publicly so everyone could get a better feel for my type of reading.  FYI, I plan on reading 8 books with over 3,500 pages in the next three months.  The list is worth looking into, even just to humor yourself.

Economic History Section – While I am trying to learn more about economics and socio-economic development I continually ask myself “How did we get to where we are today, what principles were developed and what was the historic backdrop in which these thoughts were formed?”

As a result of this thought I increasingly read books on economic history which can be found on the link below.  You will find some overlap with the economics section.

Frankly, this section needs more work and I expect to have at least three insightful articles next month.  You can take that one to the bank.

In the month of July I posted the following articles.

6/5/02 – A Brief Investment Article – Find out some of my thoughts on the stock market.  I used to work in research for an investment bank and I love the stock market.  I am not bullish on valuations though………

6/15/02 – Why I read multiple books

New Book Reviews
**************************************************************************************

Last month I promised four new book reviews by July 1, 2002 .  I am happy to say that I have delivered five new book reviews to you.  I anticipate three to four new book reviews in the months of July and August due to the length of the books I am reading right now.

The books reviewed this month I have personally read and I have posted the books in order from my favorite to least favorite.

#1) Deflation by A. Gary Shilling – Great Read for Investors and Managers, especially in today’s environment.

#2) The Business of America by John Steele Gordon - An excellent historical account of U.S. business.  Great for history buffs and those seeking to learn more about business.

#3) What Everyone Should Know About the 20th Century – After I read this I was amazed at how much technological innovation has impacted this century and the standard of living.  A long read, due to short font, but very insightful.

#4) A Brief History Of Economic Genius – Another person trying to make money by imitating The Worldly Philosophers by Robert Heilbroner.  Heilbroner is better and I found the editing to be quite poor.  It was a good read though but poor editing.

#5) Whale Done! Edited by Ken Blanchard this is one of my least favorite parables and a good waste of $15.00 - $20.00 for those that read it.

Book Club Discussion

The BetterBizBook of the Month for July is The Essential Drucker by Peter Drucker. My comments / detailed analysis as to why I think this book is truly a great work and worth reading by all can be found by clicking here.  If you have any insights/comments about the book post them on our newsgroup by joining the yahoo group I have set up by following the link below.

I am Currently Working on the Following:
***********************************************************

• TONS OF USEFUL LINKS - I am going to post about 50 interesting links by the 4th of July. Many of these are hyperlinks to online economic / philosophy texts but there are others I think some people may find useful.  I somehow deleted the file and I need to recompile the list for everyone.

• FIXING BROKEN LINKS – YIKES!  After checking some reports on my website I have learned that many hyperlinks on the website aren’t working.  As of today 100 links that users access aren’t working. I plan on having the links fixed by Mid-July as it takes some time.

• Technology & Telecommunications Report – A Brief Glance - Mid July 2002 target.

• Global Energy Review – Facts, Figures & Some Brief Comments & August 2002 target

• My Philosophy/History / Economic Project – December 2002 Target - My goal is to try and put together a report that interlinks how countries have been affected by 17th century - present philosophical thoughts. Rousseau and "Social Contract", Hume on Property, Karl Marx on the Bourgeoise, etc. The goal is to show how many of these philosophers and economists were products of their environment (they kept their eyes open) and then developed thoughts / insights that changed history. I don't anticipate having this completely done until December 2002.  I have published an example of the economic timeline I am constructing to show the overlap and dates in which the greatest economic thinkers lived.

This is part of my "BIG PROJECT" that I will have finished by the end of the year. Eventually I will have another timeline for philosophy and for political figures. I will integrate them together at some date to be determined so that people can click on Adam Smith and see what philosophers, politicians and historical / technological events may have impacted his analysis. I am going to also link the political leaders together with the other data so that people can see the economic, social and philosophical backdrop that some of the world's leading political figures were operating under. All of this is to eventually be available in a graphical format as I am a firm believer in the old adage "a picture is worth a thousand words."

Book Reviews by Subject

New Books Reviewed in June

One of the best finance books I have read in a long time.  An excellent read for those looking for insights into the stock market and future returns.

Excellent fact finding about American business.  Anyone who is a history buff or likes economic history should find this books insightful.

cover

After reading this book I gained a much better appreciation for the huge gains in standards of living that mankind has attained in the 20th Century.

This book is designed to read like The Worldly Philosophers and was a fun, insightful read.  However, the editing was very poor.

cover

Accentuate the positive was the theme of this parable.  I am absolutely convinced that parables are nothing more than narrowly focused drivel.
