vs. Distribution - The Battle Continues…
GOAL:
Help people understand the Yankee TV Dispute and why ABC, ESPN
& DISNEY might get cut off in the future.
- Are
you amazed at how expensive your monthly cable bill is or
how much DirectTV costs?
- Do
you want your cable bill to rise at 5-8% a year?
- Do
you feel you are paying for channels you really don’t want?
- Do
you want channels but you aren’t getting them?
Instead you have to “upgrade” for them…
In the following
note I hope to discuss the cable industry, the satellite TV
industry and some things the average person needs to know about
the business of cable TV.
WHY?
So when you see a
new TV channel or get a channel cut off you will be better
informed of what is driving the business decision and creating
all the hoopla.
IF YOU DON’T WANT TO LEARN a little bit about:
- The
history of cable
- The
evolution of the media industry
- Why
content matters?
- Why
consumers are fed up.
Then I shall
provide a brief synopsis of my view.
1) Most people don’t want Cablevision to charge
them an additional $1.85 a month for a network channel they
DON’T WANT!
2) Many games (at least 1/3) are held during the day
so kids and those people working can’t watch them in real
time. They can catch
the highlights on ESPN that night.
3) Most fans don’t need the YES network for
Yankee’s baseball games. Baseball
is not the most beloved sport in the nation.
To New Yorkers it might be as the sport originated in the
area. At
the end of the day should EVERY PERSON in the viewing area, even
those that DON’T WANT IT, have to pay for George
Steinbrenner’s demands? Should
the average guy have to subsidize George for paying his baseball
players hundreds of millions of dollars?
4) At the end of the day the Yankee owner (or any
professional sports team owner) is trying to make money.
When fans fight back and say “ENOUGH
IS ENOUGH” then the skyrocketing costs will stop.
If you love
sports, like I do, you will notice that (1) it costs more to go
to professional sporting events (2) many people can’t afford
to go anymore (3) It is ENORMOUSLY
expensive for families to go and (4) Professional sports are a
business.
Until demand
stops (that means you boycott a live sporting event and don’t
watch it) business owners will continue to jack up the costs.
Once you hit a business owner in the pockets they finally
get the point.
I
love sports but this crap is getting out of hand.
I have had it with professional crybabies (owners and
players.)
